Ellen Johnson

Ellen Johnson has dedicated more than three decades to the vocal music of Charles Mingus, actively engaging in performances, recordings, research, and the creation of her own lyrics (with the permission of Sue Mingus and Jazz Workshop, Inc). In a significant milestone, Johnson had the privilege of recording her original lyrics for "Peggy's Blue Skylight" alongside Charles McPherson on her debut album, titled Too Good To Title, in 1990. Throughout her career, she has contributed original lyrics to five Mingus compositions, totaling over six recorded tracks. In addition to her work as a vocalist, Johnson imparts her knowledge and expertise through workshops and webinars. Her dedication to sharing insights on the vocal music of Charles Mingus extends to her contributions as a writer, where she authored the article "The Vocal Music of Charles Mingus Part 1 & 2" as a valuable contributing writer for All About Jazz.
